Description A cultured pearl is a real, natural pearl created by a mollusk, such as an oyster or mussel, with human intervention in the cultivation process. A pearl farmer intentionally inserts a small nucleus (often a bead or a piece of tissue) into the mollusk, which then reacts by secreting layers of nacre, the same iridescent material that forms natural pearls. This process makes pearls more accessible, with over 95% of the pearls on the market today being cultured.  How Cultured Pearls are Made Nucleation: A skilled technician carefully inserts a nucleus (a bead or a piece of mantle tissue) into a mollusk. Nacre Secretion: The mollusk coats the foreign object with layers of nacre, a mixture of calcium carbonate and conchiolin, to protect itself. Pearl Formation: These layers build up over time, forming a lustrous pearl. Harvesting: Once the pearl has developed, it is harvested from the mollusk.Â
